New Green River Formation Exhibit Open at the Ark Encounter

by Ark Encounter on August 4, 2022

We’re excited to announce that our new eye-catching fossil exhibit has just opened at the Ark Encounter. This exhibit features two very large and stunning fossils, along with a custom mural and signage. It’s an extension of our flood geology exhibit on the third deck of the Ark.

The plant fossil is a palm frond fossil discovered in the Fossil Lake Member of the Green River Formation. It’s huge at 10 feet and 7 inches—one of the largest specimens ever extracted from the formation. It’s a member of a fan palm species called Sabalites powelli (presumed extinct), which is similar to living palmettos. The fish fossil display is comprised of five different fish species, remarkably preserved with no evidence of decay or scavenging. It’s going to be another favorite photo spot for our guests!

The exhibit provides background information on the formation where these fossils were found and how that location shows overwhelming evidence for catastrophic burial, not slow and gradual processes over millions of years as is generally assumed.

Start planning your trip to see this exciting new exhibit today! And remember, kids 10 and under enjoy free admission for 2022.
