Noah’s Character Design—Noah’s Got Skills

by Ark Encounter on June 1, 2014

In three of our previous posts we gave some behind-the-scenes glimpses at some of the concept designs of how we may depict Noah at the Ark Encounter:

But there’s more to the physical appearance of Noah and his family that must be explained.

We have the task of developing a pre-Flood world, explaining their culture and its technologies based on the scant information provided in Scripture. We also need to create a background to explain how Noah was capable of building the Ark and performing the many duties required of him.

What sort of career did Noah have? Did he have multiple occupations prior to building the Ark; after all, he lived five centuries before his work on the Ark? How did this preacher of righteousness acquire the numerous skills he must have had. In addition to building the Ark, he cared for a few thousand animals, led his family, and must have had some farming abilities as well.

Ark Encounter content manager Tim Chaffey recently shared ideas about Noah’s early years with the rest of the design team.

While it is fun to brainstorm about these things, we must be sure that we do not contradict what we do know about Noah from Scripture. At the same time, whenever necessary, we must be willing to break some of the stereotypical views of Noah derived from pop culture and various traditions.
