On Saturday, September 29, 2018, we will host our third annual Día Latino, where our Spanish-speaking guests can experience the Ark Encounter in their language. If you join us for this event, you’ll have the opportunity to meet one of our artists, Oscar Nava! Learn more about Oscar and his work and find out more about this year’s Día Latino below.
Oscar was born in Mexico City, Mexico, and he has enjoyed art since he was a young child. He started out by making animal forms using small pieces of wood left over from his dad’s work. He would then put a magnet on the back and sell them at church on Sundays!
He worked for many years alongside his father to learn from him and perfect the technique he uses today for God’s glory. In his pieces, Oscar uses the technique alebrije, which is a Mexican folk art and includes brightly colored animal sculptures.
If you ask Oscar what each chosen shape means on any of the animals he is working on, he has an explanation for each and every one. When Oscar works on his pieces, he draws inspiration from all around him, but his main inspirations are flowers, leaves, and God’s creation. He even tries to work a small ark into every piece!
Oscar, whose native language is Spanish, is very excited to be participating in Día Latino! You can learn more about Oscar and his work in our blog post, “Meet Ark Encounter Artist Oscar Nava,” or this blog post from the Answers in Genesis Spanish site, “Conoce el artista mexicano del Ark Encounter: Oscar Nava.”
As you walk through our life-size Noah’s ark, you’ll see Oscar’s Rainbow Covenant mural on the third deck, which is his favorite piece of work. It took him three months to complete it, sometimes working day and night to make sure it was finished in time for the Ark Encounter’s opening!
You can also see Oscar’s work and purchase your own custom keepsake in our gift shop. These pieces take him a long time to make because each piece is one of a kind. He can also be found doing presentations next to the Rainbow Covenant at select times.
Start making your plans to join us for Día Latino at the Ark Encounter and our sister attraction, the Creation Museum, today! Spanish translators will be assigned to different exhibits throughout the Ark, and you will be able to take home Spanish resources. When you walk through the gift shop, be sure to make time to meet Oscar!
